A Message from Bonham ISD School Board President: COVID-19 (March 16, 2020)

Warrior Family,

I saw a Facebook post the other day that said “Send up a prayer for your superintendent this weekend. They are navigating unchartered waters right now.”  Truer words have never been spoken.

I think it is important to know all of the things that the Superintendent has to consider when closing school. Among those are ensuring that students educational needs are met, ensuring students nutritional (school lunch) needs are met, ensuring adequate funding sources during closure to continue payroll (both contract and at-will), meeting federal guidelines from the Office of Head Start, as well as meeting the requirements of the TEA commissioner to ensure that students advance to the next grade and/or graduate. The above considerations coupled with the health and safety of staff/students is what makes this a challenging and unprecedented time in our school, state, and nation's history.

I also think it is important to note that school closure is not some knee-jerking reaction to an over-inflated pandemic. Health experts say this virus, COVID-19, is a very contagious virus that can only be slowed down by social distancing and eliminating large group contact. Closing school is but one piece of the equation and I urge you to practice social distancing and healthy hygiene practice in the coming weeks. Together we can work to “flatten the curve” and not over-run our healthcare system.

While we as a population may seem to be experiencing a gross overreaction to the virus, as evidenced by the “panic shopping,” the effects of this virus on our students is yet to be determined. Only time will tell whether we over-reacted or not, but there is no one better to have to call the shots than our Administration.

We will take the heat for being cautious, but not for being foolish. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Go Warriors and Lady Warriors,

Chance Roberts

How to Avoid COVID-19 Infection:

The best way to prevent infection is to take precautions to avoid exposure to this virus, which are similar to the precautions you take to avoid the flu. CDC always recommends these everyday actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:

· Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

· Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

· Stay home when you are sick.

· Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

· Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Vamos Warriors y Lady Warriors,

Chance Roberts
